Columbus Man Drowns in Lake Erie

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) - A Columbus man drowned when he went into Lake Erie to check a boat propeller and never resurfaced, authorities said.

Earl Evans, 53, went in the water Saturday afternoon near Camp Perry, about 35 miles east of Toledo, said Dave Goodwin of the Ohio Division of Watercraft.

The two other boat passengers dove in to look for Evans, but couldn't find him and phoned authorities, Goodwin said.

The sheriff's office marine patrol and the Ottawa County Dive team recovered Evans' body at about 5 p.m., Chief Deputy Randy Riedmaier of the Ottawa County Sheriff's office said.

The water where the drowning took place is about 22 feet deep, a Coast Guard official said.
