Update: Lorain, OH - The United Steelworkers Union says they have made the company another comprehensive contract proposal and expect their response later today. They are cautiously optimistic that they will be able to reach a tentative agreement today.
The main negotiation is wages, which currently are about $3 an hour below industry standards.
The low pay scale is because the union agreed to reduce its expected wages by 15 percent when it negotiated the last contract five years ago because Republic was losing money and falling into bankruptcy.
Workers are continuing to report for their regularly scheduled shifts.
