MARBLEHEAD, Ohio (AP) - The state will purchase 10 acres adjacent to Marblehead Lighthouse State Park, Gov. Bob Taft said Thursday.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will buy the property for $2.5 million. He said the land will provide greater access to the park's shoreline and offer improved amenities. The park will have an expanded parking lot this summer.
About 250,000 people visit the Lake Erie lighthouse each year.
The state Controlling Board still must approve the purchase. About $2 million will come from a federal Great Lakes Coastal Restoration Grant.
Marblehead Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 67-foot tower has marked the entrance to Sandusky Bay since 1822.
It is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes in continuous operation.
