Mayor Says Laying Off Police Officers Was Only Option

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio - The mayor of East Cleveland said that he had "no choice" but to lay off city police officers, 19/43 News reported.

East Cleveland mayor Emmanuel Onunwor, who is also the city's safety director, had hoped to avert laying off safety personnel by cutting overtime and not responding to minor reports, but in the end, the budget crunch was just too severe.

Onunwor said that he was forced to lay off seven police officers from traffic and beat patrols and six from the support unit at headquarters. He said that he had no other choice.

The layoffs, which took effect Thursday night, mean that traffic enforcement in the city will be hurt, as will community policing.

The mayor said that the city is simply out of money to sustain the force that it had.
