Authorities Looking For Carjacker Who Shot Pregnant Woman

CANTON, Ohio - Canton Police are searching for a carjacker that shot two people, including a pregnant woman on Thursday night, 19/43 News' Rick Jackson reported.

The carjacker wore a ski mask and latex surgical gloves when he forced 22-year-old Keisha Lewis and her boyfriend Paul Tarver, 29, into their pickup truck outside of a Country Kitchen restaurant in Canton near Harmont Avenue and U.S. Route 62 at approximately 7:45 p.m.

Canton Police said that a black male carrying a semi-automatic handgun burst into the truck and pushed Lewis to the center of the seat.

The carjacker first robbed the couple, and then shot Lewis and Tarver. The suspect shot Lewis several times and wounded Tarver on the left shin after he had exited the vehicle, according to police.

Tarver used his cellular phone to call 911, but the suspect had fled by that point, and neither Lewis or Tarver recognized their attacker.

The chef at the restaurant, Harold Burden, said that he's shocked about what happened.

"It's usually a safe area to eat," Burden said. "There are no problems. Last night was just a surprise."

Both Lewis and Tarver are still hospitalized. Lewis was in guarded condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Canton's Aultman Hospital. Tarver, meanwhile, was listed in satisfactory condition. Doctors said that Lewis' baby would be OK.

A 2-year-old daughter of the expectant mother managed to escape the attempted abduction unharmed.

If you have any information about the carjacking, you are encouraged to contact the Canton Police Department.
