Woman Gets Prison Time For Running Down Father

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A woman will serve two years in prison for unknowingly running down her father while driving home from a New Year's Eve party in an Akron suburb.

Mildred Van Meter, 32, of Coventry Township had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit the night she killed her 54-year-old father, Kenneth Van Meter, of Green.

Van Meter pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, hit-skip, DUI and driving with a suspended license.

Kenneth Van Meter walked home from a Barberton bar on New Year's Eve and his daughter left in a Dodge Ram truck a short time later.

She passed a lie detector test showing that she did not knowingly hit him.
Summit County Common Pleas Judge Jane Bond says prison time was mandated by state law.
