Put-In-Bay Mayor Resigns

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (AP) - The mayor of the Lake Erie island resort of Put-in-Bay who tried to change the village's party image, has resigned.

Mayor John Blatt resigned on Thursday during a council meeting.

Blatt, who had been mayor for six years, drew the ire of some island business owners after he called in liquor control agents last summer. Agents cited 68 people for drinking violations during two weekends.

A group of South Bass Island residents said they were prepared to call for Blatt's removal at the meeting before he stepped down.

Some said the mayor had been making false statements about some island business owners and residents.

"It was just one thing right after another," said Mark Mathys, a local hotel owner.

Blatt, who also has been pushing for a speed limit on golf carts that cruise around the village, did not say why he quit and would not comment afterward.
