Desperate Thugs Lead Police On Amazing Chases After Robbing Local Bank

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio – An amazing combination of chases and crashes followed a bank robbery on Tuesday. It looked like an action movie, but it was real action news in northeast Ohio, and, of course, Action News was there by air and by land.

It all started at the First Federal of Lakewood bank in Fairview Park, Action News' Neki Mohan reported.

Three thugs robbed the bank and took off with police right on their tails. They led police on a short chase that ended when the driver of the getaway car lost control of the vehicle on Cleveland's west side. The car slammed into a house on West Boulevard.

"I thought maybe they were on a suicide mission," one witness said.

The Action News chopper was high above the home, where bricks that were once part of the home's foundation could be seen tossed about the front lawn.

As police closed in on the four-door silver getaway car, one of the suspects got out of the car and bolted from the crash scene. The suspect stole an Ameritech truck, knocking a worker off of a telephone pole to do it. He then sped away from police and led them on another chase until he crashed the truck in the east-bank of Cleveland's Flats entertainment district.

Police moved in again and nabbed their man. Authorities surveyed the damage and found a crashed front end on the truck and a busted utility pole.

"We recovered a handgun and an undisclosed amount of cash," a police official said.

The other two suspects were arrested at the scene of the first crash on West Boulevard. One of the men was injured in the crash and easy to catch, but the other hid from authorities and had to be sought out. Meanwhile, several bags of money were taken out of the getaway car.
