College Loses $670,000 Discrimination Suit

CLEVELAND (AP) - A jury has ordered Cuyahoga Community College to pay a former dean $670,000 in an age discrimination lawsuit.

Mary Ann Stevenson, 66, was dean of Health Careers and Sciences when college officials told her in 2000 that her contract wasn't being renewed. She'd been at the college for nine years and is credited with turning around its troubled nursing program.

Stevenson says that she was fired because of her age. The college says that it didn't renew her contract because she lacked leadership qualities and that she voluntarily retired after learning she wouldn't be rehired.

The Cuyahoga County Common Pleas jury found Stevenson's resignation wasn't voluntary and that age was a factor in her firing.

The college said in a written statement it plans to appeal the verdict.
