AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A massive school construction project is in the works for Akron schools.
The district has approved a $750 million plan to replace, renovate or decommission the district's 58 schools by 2017.
The first bricks should be going up in 2005.
Now comes the hard part: Figuring out how to come up with the $284 million to pay the local share of the project.
Two ideas -- a bond issue or a countywide sales tax increase that also would pay for other improvements at other districts -- haven't got much support so far.
The project is part of a state effort to renovate and rebuild schools across Ohio. The state will pay 59 percent of the Akron project.
