Camp Owner Drowns While Setting Safety Markers In Lake

CHATHAM TOWNSHIP, Ohio - The owner of a camp in Medina County drowned to death in a lake on the facility's grounds after falling off of a boat on Thursday, Action News' Denise Strzelczyk reported.

Joe Coreno, 59, was putting up safety buoys on the 10-acre campground lake at Camp Honey-Do when he leaned over and fell out of the boat that he had been in.

The Action News chopper was high above the scene minutes after the fatal accident happened at approximately 3 p.m.

Coreno, who did not know how to swim, was not wearing a life-jacket.

Coreno's friend, 77-year-old Walter Klein, was on shore helping to place a rope marking the swimming area. He attempted to save his friend by pushing the boat toward him, but Coreno was unable to hold on.

Rescuers recovered Coreno's body approximately 20 minutes after he fell in.
