Songwriting Prize Goes To Struggling Musician From Philadelphia

CLEVELAND (AP) - A gospel tune by a Philadelphia writer won the top prize at the fifth annual John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Clint Lagerberg, 27, received a $20,000 check from the Maxell Corp. on Saturday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum for his song "Sow," which was chosen from about 25,000 entries.

Lagerberg said his wife, Christine, urged him to enter the contest. She told him which song to send and gave him the money for the $30 per-song entry fee, he said.

Now Lagerberg said he can pay her back and pay off the couple's 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, which has more than 100,000 miles on it.

Lagerberg, who works for Johnson & Johnson, said he will invest the rest.
