United Wireless Cares about the Communities We Serve

Donate A Phone

United Wireless collected nearly 8,200 phones to the cause of preventing domestic violence in 2001 through its inaugural year of participation in the Donate A Phone program. All 18 United Wireless retail locations throughout northeast Ohio serve as collection points for unused wireless phones.

Donate A Phone is a domestic violence prevention program begun in April 2000 by The Wireless Foundation, Motorola and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The program collects unused wireless phones, and then repairs, refurbishes and programs them with emergency phone numbers and free service, allowing for immediate help at the touch of a button for victims of domestic violence.

“United Wireless is proud to be a conduit for people who want to help victims of domestic violence,” said United Wireless President Mo Saedi.  “It is amazing that a tool that so many are no longer using could be the tool that save someone’s life. Our significant number of donations last year – our first year in the program – shows that people really care.”

Among the local organizations that have benefited from United Wireless’ donations are domestic violence shelters in Lakewood, Canton and Elyria.

How Donate A Phone Works

United Wireless’ participation in Donate A Phone is part of a national grass roots effort that has amassed more than one million phones to date. Its collection is pooled with other unused phones collected from sources ranging from a Scout troop to a small-town police department to a US Congressman to corporations and professional sports teams. Every donation is important and all wireless phones are useful, regardless of their age or condition. It is estimated that each phone that is collected in one year helps about five domestic violence victims, with the assumption that each person keeps the phone for two months.

Once a phone is donated, it is sent to Recellular, which reconditions and repairs the phones. The Wireless Foundation solicits requests from local domestic violence agencies for needed phones. The Foundation then receives refurbished phones and matches the request with a local carrier that will provide free airtime. Phones are then delivered to the local agencies that requested them.
