In Akron, Cats Will Be Treated Like Dogs

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Starting on Tuesday, Akron's animal warden could legally pick up any cat found off of its owner's property and kill it within five days.

City officials have said, however, that they will tread cautiously under the new law.

A spokesman said that this will be a complaint-driven system and Akron's streets won't be swept free of cats.

It's estimated that 3,500 will be picked up in the course of a year and approximately 85 percent of those cats will be euthanized.

Cat owners have been up in arms over the new law and the Citizens for Humane Animal Practices said that it would be watching how the city enforces it.
