4 Swimmers Missing On Lake Erie

HURON, Ohio (AP) - Five swimmers were reported missing Wednesday off a Lake Erie beach. One of the swimmers was rescued by firefighters, and the Coast Guard and dive teams searched the waters for the others.

The search was complicated by waves 3- to 5-feet high, said Paul Ricci, a battalion chief with the Sandusky Fire Department. The swimmers were reported missing at 2:20 p.m. off Nickel Plate beach, Ricci said.

The rescued swimmer, who wasn't identified, was taken to Firelands Community Hospital in Sandusky. Hospital spokesman Ron Parthemore said the swimmer was in good condition and would be released Wednesday. Two firefighters who helped with the rescue were treated for exhaustion and were expected to be released, he said.

Huron is about 50 miles west of Cleveland.
