Pool Closed, Lifeguards Suspended After Girl Dies

EUCLID, Ohio (AP) - The death of an 8-year-old girl at a Euclid pool on Tuesday has prompted city officials to close the pool and suspend two teen-age lifeguards.

Police haven't named the girl, but said that she is from New York and was in town visiting an aunt.

Euclid Mayor Paul Oyaski said that the girl and her aunt were leaving the Valley Pool approximately 3:30 p.m. when the aunt sent the girl back to get an item that she'd forgotten. He said that the girl was found at the bottom of the pool a short time later.

Oyaski said that the 17- and 18-year-old lifeguards who were on duty have been suspended without pay until the police finish their investigation. He said that both were properly trained for the job.
