Rape Investigation Centers Around Policeman

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio - Action News has learned that a local police officer is under investigation for rape. The Investigator, Tom Meyer, uncovered the exclusive story.

It was supposed to be a night of fun and relaxation, but for two people, a night on the town turned ugly.

A 22-year-old woman and an off-duty North Olmsted police officer crossed paths at Alexander's Restaurant this past weekend. It wasn't the first time that they had met, but they were not on a date.

According to a court document, the two had been drinking at the restaurant and continued drinking at the Insomnia bar down the road.

The officer reportedly used his training to see if the victim was drunk. She told Action News that he moved his finger back and forth and had her try to follow it. After determining that she was in no shape to drive, he took her back to his place.

"It's at that point at the residence where the (sexual) assault took place," North Olmsted Police Capt. Kevin Whelan said.

The 22-year-old victim told police that she was raped. The accused officer is an eight-year police veteran.

"He's been a good officer," Whelan said.

Police investigators turned over evidence to the county prosecutor, who is expected to present it to a grand jury next week.

It's important to note that no one has been arrested or charged in connection with the alleged incident. The officer in question is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
