CLEVELAND (AP) - An illegal immigrant hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic hopes to find out soon whether she will make it on a national transplant list while awaiting a donor liver.
Orilda Gramajo, 31, of Cleveland, said that the clinic first turned her away because she was an illegal immigrant from Guatemala.
The research hospital said that the issue was whether rules by a national transplant registry would bar her from a transplant waiting list.
The clinic now said there's no reason that the woman can't be added to the waiting list.
Political leaders and Cleveland's growing Hispanic community lobbied on behalf of the woman, who has lived in the United States and has two children who are American citizens.
