CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A worker died after a half-ton door fell on him at the Republic Technologies International plant.
Stark County Coroner James Pritchard said Melvin Woods, 46, of Canton, died of chest injuries after the steel door fell on him as employees were cleaning out a storage bin Thursday morning. The door fell off a hinge, investigators said.
The accident occurred in the melt shop, where scrap steel goes into the electric arc furnace and is melted, said John Willoughby, vice president for human resources.
The Cleveland office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating Woods' death, said Rob Medlock, area OSHA director.
Woods was a good father and a loving husband, said his wife, Juanita. They had three children: Olivia, 23, Tana, 19, and Melvin III, 13.
He had become a grandfather for the first time about two weeks ago and was working overtime to help pay for Olivia's wedding in September.
