Republic Says 1,000 Workers To Be Rehired

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) - A spokesman for Republic Technologies International said that the company taking over RTI plans to rehire about 1,000 workers at its Lorain plant.

John Willoughby said that letters have been sent to 900 hourly workers and a group of managers. He said that the list of workers who received letters is largely the same list as the one the company shared with the steelworkers union last week.

The union said that the hiring plan violates their contract and ignores seniority rights.

Willoughby said that the new company will give former Republic workers preference in hiring just as if they were coming back from a layoff. He said that cuts would be based on where in the mill employees worked.

Republic's sale to KPS Special Situations Fund and Hunt Investment Group could close as early as next week.
