Coast Guard Calls Off Search For Boater

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio (AP) - The Coast Guard called off its search Monday for a man whose abandoned boat was found drifting in Lake Erie between Marblehead and Kelleys Island.

David Rush, 38, was last seen about noon Saturday when he left Lorain alone bound for Johnson Island.

Coast Guard boats and helicopters searched the waters for about 41 hours.

By Sunday night, rescuers narrowed their search to a three-mile area northwest of the Huron River after spotting a seat cushion identical to two others on Rush's boat, Coast Guard spokesman Tim Robertson said.

Crew members of a ferry that travels between Marblehead and Kelleys Island spotted the boat with its sails up and no one on board about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Robertson said.

Marblehead is about 55 miles west of Cleveland.
