Patrol Says Man Fell Asleep At Wheel

OBERLIN, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that a man fell asleep at the wheel in Monday's fatal garbage truck crash in Oberlin.

Jerry Cox, 27, and 22-year-old passenger Beller Hardaway Jr. were killed instantly. Both were from Cleveland.

The crash occurred on U.S. Route 20 near State Route 511 in Oberlin.

The patrol estimated that the truck was traveling approximately 57 mph when it broke through a guardrail and fence, sailed across a ravine and slammed into an embankment.

The truck was on its way from Cleveland to BFI's landfill in Lorain County.

Oberlin is about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland.
