NORTON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio couple cleared of criminal charges in a fire that killed their 13-month-old son are suing investigators who they said screwed up the case.
Paul and Karen Stanley's son, Bo, died in a September 2000 fire at the family's Norton home. The Stanleys now live in Copley Township.
Five months after the fire, a Summit County grand jury indicted the Stanleys on aggravated murder charges that carried a possible death sentence. Prosecutors dismissed the charges in February, hours before the scheduled start of their trial.
The couple has filed a $25 million federal lawsuit accusing investigators of concealing evidence and mischaracterizing information to Summit County prosecutors.
The state fire marshal, the city of Norton and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are named in the suit. None have commented.
