Ohio Memorial Statue Swiped, Possibly For Scrap

LAKEMORE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities suspect scrap metal thieves are behind the disappearance of a statue that was a Memorial Day gathering point in the Akron suburb of Lakemore.

The 3-foot tall figure of a World War I soldier was made of a zinc alloy, and police say the people who stole it may have thought it was more valuable bronze.

Mayor Mike Kolomichuk (kuh-LAH'-mih-chuhk) says he's "miserable sick" that the doughboy is gone from Lakemore Memorial Park, where it had stood atop a pedestal for 70 years.

Police in the village say the statue was broken off at the ankles some time Tuesday night. They have no leads.
