Hundreds Attend Service For Slain Officer

MASSILLON, Ohio (AP) - A memorial will be built honoring safety officers who die in the line of duty, the mayor told people attending a service for a city patrolman killed during a car chase.

The memorial park will be built in downtown Massillon, Mayor Francis Cicchinelli said at Sunday's service for Eric Taylor. He was shot Aug. 9 while pursuing a man who fled a traffic stop.

"We want to construct a permanent memorial for Eric and all the safety forces who have given the supreme sacrifice," the mayor said.

In a video presentation of photographs, mourners saw Taylor (pictured with wife and kids, above) mature from infancy to his teens to manhood.

Police Chief Mark Weldon recalled his last conversation with Taylor, when he teased him about not shaving before work.

Then Weldon recalled the phone call he received Aug. 9.

"I got the call that no chief ever wants to get," he said, calling Taylor "one of the good ones."
