Man Struck By Lightning While Working On Roof

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Lightning struck a roofer on top of an apartment building as storms hit central Ohio Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

Mateo Vasquez, 26, was struck in the stomach, and his heart was not beating when medics arrived about 3:30 p.m., fire spokeswoman Kelly McGuire said. The medics got his pulse back and took him to Mount Carmel East Hospital.

Witnesses said Vasquez was working with four other roofers and was struck just after he bent down to pick up his tool belt.

"He jumped like 20 feet in the air and landed on the roof and one of the other roofers jumped up and got him down," witness Paul Straight said.

Residents of the southeast-side apartment complex performed CPR until medics arrived.

Mount Carmel transferred Vasquez to Ohio State University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Sunday night.
