CLEVELAND (AP) - Cuyahoga County Democrats are outraged over the selection by Republicans of a state appeals court candidate with the same last name as theirs.
On Tuesday night, a GOP committee chose Laura Gallagher -- a Medina County magistrate -- to run for a seat on the Eighth Ohio District Court of Appeals. Her opponent will be Democrat Sean Gallagher, a Cleveland municipal judge.
Cuyahoga County Democratic Chairman Jimmy Dimora called the selection of Laura Gallagher a travesty. He said that it's an obvious attempt to confuse the voters.
But the county's Republican chairman, state Rep. Jim Trakas, denied that there was any ulterior motive. The Republicans were having trouble finding a candidate and he said that Laura Gallagher called him.
Wednesday was the deadline to become a candidate for the seat being vacated by Judge Terrence O'Donnell, who decided not to run for re-election.
