Man Charged In Explosion That Destroyed Trumbull County House

GIRARD, Ohio (AP) - A man has been charged in a natural gas explosion that destroyed a vacant house under renovation near Youngstown and damaged 50 others.

Donald Shelley Jr. was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated arson, vandalism and breaking and entering. He was being held Wednesday on a $250,000 bond and had no attorney listed in court records.

Girard Police Detective Greg Manente says Shelley stole copper piping Sept. 16 from the house about 5 miles north of Youngstown.

Manente says Shelley was operating in the dark and inadvertently pulled out the gas line.

The explosion two days later killed two dogs. Flying debris and the impact of the blast caused structural damage to neighboring houses.
