Steps you take when a loved one passes

  • Notify a funeral director/funeral home
  • Have funeral director provide you with a death certificate for copy to companies, banks, etc.
  • Decide on calling hours and ceremony style
  • Inform family and friends
    • Who else do you call?
      • Employer and fellow co-workers
      • Insurance company
      • Family doctor
      • Church
      • Social Club
      • Bank & Financial companies
  • Decide who may give a eulogy/be a pall bearer
  • Notify legal representation of the deceased or administrator of the estate
  • Call a cemetery advisor to help with burial decisions
      • If this is not already pre-planned, you may want help as these decisions are difficult in the hours following loss of a loved one
      • Decide on casket, or urn
  • Decide on disposition & Memorial
      • Traditional burial or cremation
      • Some cemeteries have restrictions on grave markers, vaults, and memorials.
  • Choose Cemetery 
  • Decide on funeral service, before or after burial, and visitation
  • Write the Obituary
  • Memorialize - opt for an online memorial or personal remembrance for others to view who may not be able to attend services
