Fire Damages Church's Classrooms, Roof

ASHLAND, Ohio (AP) - A fire Friday at the First United Methodist Church destroyed some classrooms and collapsed a roof, and three firefighters were taken to a hospital.

A nursing supervisor at Samaritan Hospital said the firefighters were undergoing treatment. She did not know their conditions Friday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Duane Fishpaw said the fire was reported late morning and fire crews remained at the scene mid-afternoon. His initial reports indicated the fire was in classrooms and the roof collapsed.

He did not know the cause of the fire.

The church was built in 1957 on property where a church has stood since 1838. The first church there was destroyed in a fire more than 118 years ago.
