Teacher Accused Of Buying 'Date-Rape' Drug Chemical Appears In Court

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - A teacher accused of buying and possessing the chemical used to make the date-rape drug appeared in court on Tuesday, Action News reported.

Darren Adkins, 28, of Lakewood, who teaches at Strongsville High School, has been charged with possession of a chemical used to manufacture a controlled substance.

Adkins appeared in court on Tuesday to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Investigators said that Adkins (pictured in court, above) bought the chemical GBL from a Canadian company that sold it as GHB "drug-making kits" over the Internet. Police said that Adkins bought at least three bottles since summer and sold them for $100 apiece.

A computer and bottles of a clear liquid were seized from his home, police said.

GBL, an ingredient in pesticides, also is used to make GHB, gamma hydroxybutyrate, an odorless, clear liquid sometimes used to immobilize rape victims. The drug can induce euphoria and unconsciousness. Overdoses can be fatal.

Lakewood Police arrested Adkins and more than 100 others as part of a two-year investigation.
