Recent Prison Inmate Dies In Street Shooting

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A man who was a prison inmate as recently as last week died when he was gunned down in a Canton street.

Jimmy Bowers was shot Monday night.

Bowers, 39, of Canton, was shot several times in the chest, becoming the city's third homicide victim of the year. Police believe he died where he fell, although he was taken to Aultman Hospital.

A spokesman for the Stark County coroner's office said preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Tuesday show Bowers died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police detective Lt. Jerry Steiner said the shooting happened in an area with frequent drug deals. He said police found a gun, but they weren't sure if it's the same one used to kill Bowers.

Bowers had been arrested 31 times. The majority of those arrests resulted in felony drug charges.
