MASSILLON, OH (WOIO) - The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a deadly fire that broke out at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Stark County Coroner confirms 78-year-old Robert E. Oliver Sr. is the resident of 1342 3rd Street that perished in the fire.
According to the Massillon Fire Department, Oliver died before rescuers could reach him.
Assistant Fire Chief Matt Heck says neighbors tried to save Oliver, but heavy smoke and flames kept them from being able to. One of those neighbors was transported to a local hospital after suffering lacerations from his rescue efforts.
Over a dozen firefighters reportedly responded to the scene. The flames took about a half hour to put out, and the house is estimated to be a total loss, according to Heck.
This is Massillon’s first residential fire-related death in 2018.
