CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A Maple Heights man proved himself a prime example of why police departments all over the country feel compelled to warn the public against engaging in celebratory gunfire.

According to police, 33-year-old Keith Henry was in an open field shooting his 9mm into the air near the intersection of 55th St. and Woodland Ave. sometime after midnight on New Year’s Day.

Upon attempting to holster his firearm at the conclusion of the celebratory gunfire, Henry accidentally shot himself in the right calf. He called his girlfriend from the scene to transport him to Cleveland Clinic ER.

Doctors at the clinic called police to investigate the incident.

Henry, both the suspect and the victim in the case, was charged with illegally discharging a firearm and causing injury to a person. That person being himself.
