BRIMFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - A Brimfield Township man is in police custody on charges related to the murder of his wife.
Erik Cunningham, 31, made his first appearance in Ravenna Municipal Court on Friday morning via video from the jail.
On Thursday night, investigators from the Brimfield Police Department and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Hazelnut Drive to conduct a welfare check after Cunningham reportedly made concerning statements to deputies concerning his 33-year-old wife, Lacie Cunningham.
When law enforcement arrived, the woman was suffering from an apparent fatal gunshot wound in the couple’s garage.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and took Cunningham into custody without incident.
Cunningham has been charged with one count of murder.
A Portage County judge set bond at $1 million. Cunningham’s attorney asked for a reduced bond because of the couple’s children, but the judge denied the request.
Cunningham’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11.
