CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Changes are coming to the Ohio Turnpike.
The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission says it plans to modernize its system by removing toll gates.
Construction will begin later this year to remove toll booths for E-Z pass customers.
The new system will provide non-stop travel for E-Z pass holders at speeds of 70 miles per hour for those driving the entire length of the turnpike.
Other E-Z pass drivers will only have to slow down to 10 or 15 miles per hour.
The Turnpike said its toll collection was implemented in 2009 and is approaching the end of its useful life. It said nearly 90 percent of customers support a plan to remove toll gates.
The new toll collection system should be complete by the end of 2021.
