CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A five-mile backup left thousands of drivers stranded on I-480 Tuesday morning, and now, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is taking action.
The backup stemmed from a construction contractor, Karvo Companies, not moving their orange barrels off the highway in time for rush hour.
That’s right, it happened yet again.
Karvo’s deadline to clear the barrels was 5 a.m.
19 News dropped by the company’s headquarters to ask why the roadway was not cleared on time, forcing thousands of people to sit in a virtual parking lot on I-480 near Warrensville Center Road. However, Karvo has not yet responded to our requests for comment.
ODOT fined the company $310 per lane, per minute for a total of $100,000 for failing to meet its obligations as agreed. ODOT also told the company to stop work for at least a couple of days, until it can submit a workable plan as to how it will remove its equipment on time.
