PARMA, OH (WOIO) - Parma police took the owner of a casket store in custody and charged her with theft from an elderly person.

Karen Hayes is the owner of The Casket Store on Ridge Road in Parma. She is accused of accepting payment for products that include headstones, caskets, and urns, and failing to fulfill those purchases.

Parma police have identified at least seven individuals who fell victim to Hayes’ scam.

In the past, Hayes was the target of a separate investigation after consumers complained to 19 News about paying for headstones, but not getting them from The Casket Store as promised.

Other individuals claiming to have been scammed by Hayes commented their stories on the city of Parma Police Department’s Facebook post.

“I have a very long story about how she scammed my family! I did eventually have to call 19 news to get her scared enough to produce a stone we waited 2 years for in 2 days. But she’s done this to many people! My grandparents laid in an unmarked grave for over a year!,” Lisa Zorn wrote.

Hayes made her initial court appearance on April 10. She was released on the condition that she does not travel from the area and does not communicate with the victim. Her next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.

Parma police ask that anybody else who may have been scammed by Hayes contact the police department at 440-885-1234.
