CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -In the next week or two, some of the smartest buoys on planet will be put back into Lake Erie which have the ability to reply to a text message.

The buoys are a part of the National Data Buoy Center and are manged by several research based organizations like the Great Lake Observing System (GLOS).

“Each buoy is different. Typically, it will tell information like wind speed and direction along with air temperature. But some get more detailed, monitoring wave height and other conditions,” according to David Fitch, a GLOS Communications Specialist.

The GLOS is hoping more people use the buoys this year after they are put back in the lake now that its unfrozen.

Each buoy has an ID number.

When you text that number to 1-866-218-9973 the buoy will text you back with various information.

For the complete list of buoys, their location and the ID number to text to the number above click here.

“Primarily, people use the service to check conditions for recreation: especially fishing and boating,” Fitch said. “It’s really helpful to have the conditions right there on your mobile phone to help you find fish, flat water, or just check to see if it’s safe to go out.”
