CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The sneezing and itchy eyes brought on by spring allergies are proving to be particularly nasty this spring.
According to a report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the Cleveland and Akron areas have seen a jump from last year to this year in the national ranking of cities being hit hard by seasonal allergies.
Akron ranks 27th nationally and Cleveland 32nd, which includes a worse than average pollen score.
At least we’re not suffering like Toledo and Dayton which rank 11th and 13th, respectively.
Dr. Sandra Hong of the Cleveland Clinic suggests keeping the windows of your house closed if you have an allergy sufferer in the home.
What you may not realize, Dr Hong says, is that your pets may be a key factor in your allergy issues.
“If you’ve got pets, they’re covered in pollen,” Dr Hong says, “Once you bring them in, you’re hugging them, you’re definitely going to have that. And if they sleep with you, you’re bringing the tree into your home.”
Prescription and over the counter medications are the first line of defense and Dr. Hong also suggests using a saline nasal spray when you come in from outside.
