Former 19 News traffic reporter Rick Abell dies at age 67

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - News personality Rick Abell, known for his airborne traffic and breaking news coverage on 19 News, has died at the age of 67.

Abell’s wife Denise confirmed his death to 19 News, saying he died on May 5 from health complications following hip surgery.

Abell was known for his unpredictable personality and informing reports from the 19 News helicopter in the 1990s and early 2000s.

He published a book titled “Abell Airborne." In the book, Abell detailed his life working in the television news industry.

The “Sky Chief” also reported for Cleveland Newsradio WTAM 1100 and was a member of the Ohio Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Abell was living with his wife in Sterling Heights, Mich. at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held in southern Maryland, according to Abell’s wife, where his family is located.
