SANDUSKY, Ohio (WOIO) - It’s been over a decade since 7-year-old Maria McNamara died tragically of a glioma, but her namesake organization remains hard at work raising money for kids diagnosed with childhood brain tumors.

Prayers From Maria is a non-profit organization "dedicated to funding global research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for the deadliest childhood brain tumors known as gliomas; raising public awareness about gliomas and bringing hope to children and their families.”

“Maria’s Field of Hope” is the result of a recent partnership with Cedar Point. There will be a “Planting Hope” ceremony at the new sunflower field next to the Express Hotel on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

General Manager Jason McClure and Prayers From Maria co-founders Megan and Ed McNamara will be on hand at the event.

The organization planted their first field of sunflowers in 2013 along I-90 in Avon. Development in the area poses an ongoing risk to the sunflower field’s future, but continuing donations have kept the sunflowers in place thus far.

We’re told to expect a full bloom at both the Avon and Sandusky locations this year.
