ELYRIA, Ohio (WOIO) - A single engine plane crash near the Elyria Airport claimed the pilot’s life on Sunday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said they got the call for a plane crash on Middle Avenue around 2:31 p.m.

On scene, they found the single engine Piper Cub heavily damaged from the collision.

Deputies said the pilot had succumbed to his multiple injuries sustained from the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the pilot as 63-year-old Joseph Begany of Elyria.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Begany received his Sport Pilot certification in 2011.

There were no other occupants in the plane, according to Lifecare Ambulance.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported to the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation which is still ongoing.

The FAA will be the primary investigators of this tragic incident.

The highway patrol said the Carlisle Fire Department, Life Care Ambulance Service, the Lorain County Coroner’s Office and The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Aviation Section also responded to the scene.
