Former Twinsburg teacher sentenced for sexual battery involving student

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - A former home economics teacher at Twinsburg High School was sentenced Wednesday for having sex with a student inside her classroom.

Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Susan Baker Ross sentenced Laura Bucy to two years in prison. Bucy was also ordered to register as a Tier 3 sex offender.

In court, an advocate read the victim’s statement saying in part, “It felt like you had all the power over me and could change my grade in a moments notice or worse, get me in trouble with the school.”

This case goes back to 2018. Bucy admitted to having sex with her then 17-year-old student. police also said she and the student exchanged explicit videos of each other on snapchat.

The student says Bucy made him swear to never tell. In his words, “It truly got out of hand. I began drinking alone in my room on weekdays. I started to isolate myself from others and stopped communication with my family so I could be alone.”

In June 2019, Bucy pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery.

Before being sentenced, her attorneys argued she suffers from a mental illness, which played a role in her behavior.

Bucy turned to the victim’s family saying, “Everyday I think about what occurred and how it must be hard for your family. I’m so sorry for the pain that i caused the victim, his family, my own family and my colleagues.”

Judge Ross decided jail time was appropriate, not just probation and therapy. She said, “Certainly, I believe there are some real concerns about you moving forward.”

Judge Ross says she’ll consider early release at an appropriate time.
