AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Some areas off Copley Road in Akron are starting to give many in the neighborhood bad vibes.
“I normally won’t even drive down Copley Road because there is always something going on and shooting or something,” said longtime Akron resident Sally Williams.
Her reaction is just part of the frustration that many in Akron are experiencing after hearing about the shooting death of a 19-year-old just minutes before the last day of 2020.
Police said that neighbors reported several shots were fired at 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
When officers arrived in the 900 block of Baughman Street, they found the 19-year-old victim on the front lawn with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Darlene Ramsey stays less than four blocks from where the shooting happened, and she is realistic regarding her opinion of where Akron’s stretch of violence may be headed.
“Well, it concerns me because I have grandchildren around that age and older... and I’m concerned about their whereabouts.”
Ramsey went on to say that she is not shocked by the events of Wednesday night.
“It doesn’t surprise me because of the guards we let down as parents and grandparents, as fathers. A lot of young people out here today don’t feel the love at home you know,” said Ramsey.
19 News has been told that the victim’s name is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification.
