(WOIO) - Family Video, one of the last remaining bricks and mortar video rental stores in the U.S., announced it’s closing the rest of its stores for good.
About 250 Family Video stores are still open across the country, including in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Massillon, Medina and North Canton.
At one point, Family Video had 800 locations.
Keith Hoogland, president of Family Video since 1995, said the impact of COVID-19 meant less foot traffic to stores and less movie releases.
“I am extremely thankful to our employees and customers that were instrumental in Family Video’s success. Without you, we would not have been the last man standing in our industry,” Hoogland wrote.
Family Video opened its first store in 1978.
Legacy Commercial Property, a division of Family Video that owns property in multiple communities, will continue to operate.
FamilyVideo.com will be staying open to sell movies, CBD products, t-shirts, memorabilia and more.
