CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Can Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes put on a show? Uh, remember October 22, 2016? That’s the day that Baker threw for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns, and Patrick put up 734 yards and 5 touchdowns. Mayfield’s Sooners beat Mahomes’ Texas Tech Red Raiders in a shootout, 66-59.

“We had to score every single drive in the second half to win,” Mayfield said in a zoom meeting on Wednesday. “Pat threw the ball 80-something times (88) and had 800 yards all purpose by himself. It was an unbelievable game, unbelievable atmosphere, something that I won’t forget.”

Mayfield would go on to win the Heisman the following year and come to Cleveland. Mahomes didn’t win a Heisman, but in only three seasons won a Lombardi with the Chiefs. There is no throw he can’t make, no deficit he can’t overcome.

“You’ve all seen it, we’ve all seen it,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He’s a special player. Can make every play, inside the pocket, outside the pocket. Can move in the pocket and buy time. He’s a really good athlete. He’s a special player.”

Baker beat ‘em twice in college, with Patrick answering once in the NFL, two seasons ago. Now it’s Mayfield vs. Mahomes IV. Two 25-year old franchise quarterbacks, although surprisingly Baker is the oldest AFC quarterback left in these playoffs. Did he realize that?

“Yeah, my mother-in-law sent me something the other day reminding me I’m the old guy,” Mayfield said.
