Akron firefighters search collapsed home for man who barricaded himself shortly before it caught fire

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Investigators were on the scene Monday to search the burned-out collapsed structure in the 700 block of Moraine Avenue for the body of a man who barricaded himself in the house shortly before the structure caught fire.

The man apparently was emotionally disturbed by a family matter and refused to come out of the house at 741 Moraine Ave. on Saturday evening, according to police.

When police arrived, the man, who authorities believed had a gun, refused to exit the home.

A short time later, smoke began to pour from the structure, and police called the fire department.

The structure became fully involved and eventually collapsed. Fire companies used defensive tactics to put the fire out, according to the Akron Fire Department.

“As the fire escalated, the house did become unsafe structurally and sound and it did collapse. We are uncertain if there’s still someone in the house at this time.” said Akron fire spokesperson Sierjie Lash.

No injuries to response personnel were reported, and the fire is under investigation.

Police are not certain if the man escaped from the fire. Monday, investigators went door-to-door, gathering information.

Also recovered from the scene, two rabbits and a pig found in cages in the backyard. The Humane Society and Animal Rescue were on the scene to assist.

Moraine Avenue remains partially closed as investigators work what they consider to be a crime scene.
