CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Two Florida men who scammed Northern Ohio grandparents out of nearly $400,000 pleaded guilty today to nine counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.

In 2020, John Tyler Pla, 25, and Johnny Lee Palmer, 26, both of Tampa, Florida, called elderly victims in Brecksville, Parma, Gates Mills, Lorain, Mansfield, Fairview Park, Westlake, and Mentor areas and pretended to be relatives, such as grandchildren, according to court documents.

The conspirators told their victims that they’d been arrested and required money for bail, according to a press release. They would arrange to pick up the money in a rented U-Haul.

The two are scheduled to be sentenced on July 26.

If you know someone who is age 60 or older who has been a victim of financial fraud they can contact the National Elder Fraud Hotline: 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311).
