Convicted sex offender gets 39-year prison sentence for kidnapping, touching 11-year-old Sandusky girl
ERIE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - A convicted sex offender found guilty of kidnapping, importuning, gross sexual imposition and unlawful restraint for touching an 11-year-old girl was sentenced Thursday to 39 years in prison.
A jury found Darius Knight guilty in April.
Paulette Lilly the Chief Assistant Prosecutor for Erie County urged Judge Roger Binette to give Knight consecutive sentences at the maximum for each of four counts.
“This is not a matter of whether or not incarceration is appropriate but a matter for how long that incarceration should be,” Lilly said, “I think there is an inordinate amount of information that Darius Knight poses a danger to our community.”
When asked, by the judge, Knight had nothing to say in his defense before the judge passed down the sentence.
Knight, lured the girl to his home, asked her to come inside and then locked the door behind her and touched her at his Barker Street home in August 2019 as she was collecting money for charity.
He was released from prison in the summer of 2018 after being convicted of attempted rape.
Knight’s neighbors were never notified a convicted sex offender was moving in.
Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth apologized to the community after this incident.
“We did not fulfill our responsibility to the community...It’s inexcusable, this could have been avoided,” Sigsworth said.
